Understanding a Letter of Protection

A Letter of Protection is an arrangement concerning payment for care in connection with an injury claim. Health First considers qualifying arrangements; acceptance and payment terms must be confirmed with the team.

An LOP does not mean treatment is free or that a claim will have a particular outcome. Before signing, ask your attorney and the clinic to explain the written terms, including your payment responsibilities if the claim does not resolve as expected.

For Patients

You can contact Health First with questions about an attorney referral or proposed LOP. Share your attorney’s contact information through the intake process, and ask which records or documents to bring. Clinical recommendations depend on your evaluation.

For Referring Offices

Contact the team to discuss clinic availability, referral intake, and the appropriate process for records requests. Patient information should be shared only through an agreed channel and with the required authorization.

Questions Before Your Visit

Are all LOP referrals automatically accepted?

No. Contact Health First to confirm the arrangement and required paperwork before assuming acceptance.

Do I need an attorney to contact the clinic?

You can contact the team directly to ask about scheduling and available payment arrangements.

Does an LOP determine the treatment plan?

Clinical recommendations are based on the patient’s evaluation and response to care.

How should records be requested?

Ask the team about its records request process and any required patient authorization. Do not send sensitive records through a general inquiry form.
